Google Ads Clicks but No Leads? Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Getting Google Ads clicks but no leads almost always comes down to one of three problems: the wrong people are clicking, the right people land on a page that does not convert them, or leads are arriving but your tracking cannot see them (or is counting things that are not leads).

Each of these leaves clues inside your account. Work through them in the order below, starting with tracking, because every other decision you make depends on it.

This is the same order we follow when we audit accounts as part of our performance marketing work.

Key takeaways

  • Check conversion tracking first. Counting page views or firing tags twice makes a bad campaign look good, and missing call or WhatsApp tracking makes a good one look dead.
  • The search terms report shows what people actually typed. Job seekers, students, DIY searchers and “free” hunters are the most common budget leaks.
  • For local businesses, set location targeting to “Presence” and switch off the Display Network inside Search campaigns.
  • Send each ad to a page that repeats its promise, loads fast on mobile data and asks for as little as possible.
  • Do not hand bidding to automation until real leads are being tracked reliably.

Step 1: Rule out conversion tracking errors

Before you change a keyword, check that Google is counting the right thing. Many “Google Ads not converting” problems start here.

Counting page views as leads

If your conversion fires when someone loads the contact page, or worse, any page, Google will report conversions while your phone stays silent. A lead should be counted only when a form is actually submitted, usually on a thank-you page or a submit event.

Duplicate tags and the wrong counting setting

The same conversion can fire twice when the tag is hard-coded on the site and also added through Google Tag Manager, or when a GA4 import and a Google Ads tag both count the same form as primary actions.

Also check the counting option. Google’s guide to conversion counting options recommends counting “One” conversion per click for leads, while website conversions default to “Every”. If one person submits your form three times, that is still one lead.

Missing call and WhatsApp tracking

Many Indian customers tap “Call” or “WhatsApp” instead of filling a form. If those taps are not tracked, Google shows zero leads while you are actually getting enquiries, and its bidding learns from an incomplete picture. Track calls from ads, calls from your website and WhatsApp button clicks as separate conversion actions.

The quick test

  • Use Tag Assistant or Tag Manager’s preview mode to confirm one submission fires exactly one conversion.
  • Compare the last 30 days of Google Ads conversions with your real enquiries from forms, calls and WhatsApp. If the two numbers are far apart, fix tracking before anything else.

Step 2: Read the search terms report before touching bids

Your keywords are what you bid on. The search terms report shows what people actually typed before clicking. Sort it by cost and read the top 20 to 30 terms. This is where most wasted ad spend hides.

Irrelevant intent that eats Indian ad budgets

These themes show up again and again in Indian accounts. Add the ones that do not fit your business as negative keywords:

  • Jobs: job, jobs, vacancy, hiring, salary, naukri, internship, fresher
  • Free stuff: free, download, pdf, template, sample
  • Learning: course, training, institute, certification, syllabus, “how to become”
  • DIY: how to, at home, DIY, tutorial, YouTube
  • Wrong buyer: wholesale, franchise, dealership, distributor (or the reverse, if you sell B2B and get retail shoppers)
  • Second-hand: used, second hand, OLX, refurbished
  • Information only: meaning, in Hindi, definition, wiki

Negative keywords do not match close variants, so add singular and plural forms (“job” and “jobs”) and common misspellings. Save them as negative keyword lists so every new campaign starts protected.

Match types: broad match needs guardrails

Broad match can show your ad for searches only loosely related to your keyword. Google pairs broad match with Smart Bidding, which in turn depends on accurate conversion data.

If your tracking is new or your budget is small, start core keywords on phrase and exact match. Expand to broad once you know which searches turn into real leads, and keep checking search terms weekly.

Step 3: Check who and when you are targeting

Location: “Presence” vs “Presence or interest”

Google’s recommended default, “Presence or interest”, reaches people in or regularly in your location and also people who have shown interest in it, according to Google’s guide to advanced location options.

For a Faridabad clinic or a Gurugram salon, someone in Pune reading about Gurugram is not a customer. If you can only serve people who are physically nearby, switch to “Presence”, use a radius or pin-code-level targeting around the areas you actually serve, and check the location report to see where clicks really came from.

Ad schedule

If your leads arrive by phone, ads running at 11 pm when nobody answers are wasted. Check performance by day and hour, then run ads when someone can respond, or simply lower bids off-hours if night-time form leads are good.

Networks: switch off Display in Search campaigns

Search campaigns can include the Google Display Network in their network settings. Display placements can bring lots of cheap, low-intent clicks from apps and websites. Segment your results by network and switch off anything that spends without converting.

Step 4: Fix the landing page

Message match

The ad says “Same-day AC repair in Faridabad”. The click lands on a generic homepage with a slider. That gap kills conversions.

Send each ad group to a page, or at least a section, that repeats the ad’s promise in the first screen: the same service, the same area, a starting price if you can share one, and one clear button.

Form friction

  • Ask only what you need to call back: name, phone, and maybe locality or service.
  • Avoid mandatory email, OTP walls and CAPTCHAs that break on mobile.
  • Keep call and WhatsApp buttons visible without scrolling.
  • Say what happens next, such as “We’ll call you back today”, but only if it is true.

Mobile speed

Open your landing page on a mid-range phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. If it feels slow to you, it feels slower to a stranger who clicked an ad. Run it through Google’s PageSpeed Insights, compress images, and remove autoplay videos, heavy sliders and pop-ups.

Trust

Show real photos, reviews and your address with a map. A short video of your team or premises often builds trust faster than text.

Step 5: Don’t switch to Smart Bidding too early

Strategies like Maximize conversions and Target CPA optimise towards whatever you have told Google is a conversion. If that is a page view or a duplicate fire, automation will chase the wrong people efficiently.

Google’s Smart Bidding guide says conversion tracking must be set up first, and recommends evaluating performance over periods with at least 30 conversions. In practice:

  1. Start with manual CPC, or Maximize clicks with a maximum CPC limit, while you clean search terms and verify tracking.
  2. Move to Maximize conversions once real, verified leads are being recorded consistently.
  3. After switching, give it time. Changing targets every few days keeps the system relearning.

Match what you see in your account with the most likely cause.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Plenty of clicks, phone silent, 0 conversions Wrong-intent traffic or a weak page Read search terms, then test the landing page on a phone
Google shows many conversions, you see few enquiries Tag counts page views or fires twice Count only submits; set lead actions to “One”; remove duplicate tags
Calls and WhatsApp chats come in, Google shows none Calls and WhatsApp clicks not tracked Add call conversions and WhatsApp click events
Search terms full of job, course, free, how to Broad match without negatives Add negative keyword lists; move core terms to phrase or exact
Clicks from cities you don’t serve “Presence or interest” or a radius that’s too wide Switch to “Presence”, tighten the radius, exclude areas
Good CTR, visitors leave instantly Ad and page don’t match Dedicated landing page that repeats the ad’s promise
People start the form but don’t submit Too many fields, OTP or broken mobile validation Cut to 2 or 3 fields, test on a phone, add call and WhatsApp
Cheap clicks, zero leads, odd app placements Display Network on inside a Search campaign Turn off Display in campaign network settings
Enquiries at night that nobody answers No ad schedule Run ads in staffed hours or lower bids off-hours
Costs jumped after moving to automated bidding Smart Bidding learning from bad or thin data Fix tracking, use controlled bidding until leads are reliable
Page loads slowly on 4G Heavy images, sliders and scripts Compress, simplify, test with PageSpeed Insights
Leads come in but don’t become sales Weak qualification or slow follow-up Add one qualifying field, call back fast, record outcomes

The last row matters more than it looks. Once you record which leads became customers, you can import those offline conversions so bidding learns from sales, not just form fills.

FAQs

Why am I getting clicks but no conversions on Google Ads?

Usually because the wrong searches are triggering your ads, the landing page does not match the ad or is hard to use on mobile, or your conversion tracking is broken. Check tracking first, then the search terms report, then the page.

How long should I wait before judging a campaign?

Give a new campaign enough clicks to show a pattern, typically a few weeks rather than a few days. That said, irrelevant search terms and broken tracking can be spotted and fixed on day one, so do not wait to clean those up.

Are competitors or bots clicking my ads?

Some invalid clicks happen, and Google filters many of them automatically. Look for sudden spikes in clicks from one location or at odd hours. In our experience, though, most “no leads” problems trace back to targeting, landing pages or tracking rather than fraud.

Should I use broad match keywords?

Broad match can work well when conversion tracking is accurate and Smart Bidding has enough data to learn from. Without that, it often pulls in loosely related searches. Start with phrase and exact match, then test broad match carefully.

How many negative keywords do I need?

There is no fixed number. Start with the common themes above, then add new ones every week from your search terms report.

How do I know my conversion tracking is working?

Submit a test enquiry and confirm in Tag Assistant that exactly one conversion fires. Then compare a month of reported conversions with your actual forms, calls and WhatsApp chats. They should be close.
